There will be a doctor on call in the Fayetteville Woodpeckers dugout during their inaugural 2019 season.

Nate Shaver, who earned a doctorate degree in education with a focus on learning, design and technology from New Mexico State University, was named manager of the Carolina League team Thursday by its major league affiliate, the Houston Astros. Shaver served last season as development coach for the Carolina League champion Buies Creek Astros, who played their first two seasons at Campbell University’s Jim Perry Stadium while waiting for Fayetteville’s downtown stadium to be built.

With the stadium on schedule to be ready by March 29 and the home opener set for April 18, naming a manager was the next big step before major league organizations head south to start spring training late next month.

The 32-year-old Shaver, who resides in Sanford, was introduced during a Thursday morning press conference at the Woodpeckers’ offices at Festival Park Plaza. The announcement coincided with the Astros revealing the 2019 coaching staffs for all seven of their minor league affiliates.
