BELLINGHAM, WA -- Claire Morgan and Joel Grossman were recently announced as the new Head Soccer Coaches for Whatcom Community College. Claire will be coaching women’s soccer and Joel will be coaching men’s soccer.
Originally from Bellingham, Claire brings experience from the WFC Rangers program as both a player and a coach. She is a recent graduate of WWU in recreation and an alumnus of Western’s soccer program, where she served as Team Captain during her senior year. Morgan was named First Team GNAC All-Star for three years and was an honorable mention selection for the other. Morgan is a Bellingham High School graduate, earning the record for all-time leading goal scorer for either the girls’ or boys’ programs.
Her former coaches continue to glow about their soccer experiences with Claire and her ability to provide leadership to WCC’s program. Claire commented, "I feel so honored and privileged to get the chance to give back to the soccer community in Whatcom County that has given so much to me. Whatcom Community College is a great establishment, and the soccer programs have been successful in the past. I hope to continue and improve upon that success."
Morgan has been coaching with the WFC Rangers Program for the past five years and has coached at numerous camps, including the WWU Blue Chip Camp, the Day Camp, and the Bellingham High School Raider Camp. She worked as a Senior Trainer for the Whatcom Soccer Academy (WSA) and served as the Lead Trainer for the WSA Summer Soccer Camps last summer. Further, Claire helped organize and run the TOPSoccer Program in Whatcom County.
Joel began his college soccer career at Skagit Valley College where he was part of the team who won the Tri-State Community College Championship. During this year, he was recognized by the conference with honors for his level of play and contributions to the Cardinals’ team. Grossman continued his athletic career at Western, competing for three years and serving as team captain. In his final year, he helped Western clinch a league title. Joel currently plays for the WSA Rapids.
Grossman has been actively coaching for the past eight years and also owns and runs a business, SoccerFit Elite – a private company specializing in individual soccer lessons. Grossman stated, “I understand the commitment to academics and the time commitment it takes to be a successful student-athlete.” Joel is a graduate of the business program at WWU.
WCC Athletic Director Kris Baier shared, “Whatcom is very excited to have such high-caliber, high-energy coaches stepping in as leaders of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. Whatcom has enjoyed a great history in our programs, establishing a tradition of success both in the classroom and on the field. I have no doubt that Claire and Joel will provide excellent leadership to keep WCC’s soccer program moving forward.”
