Spokane dominates 2011 Men and Women's Track and Field Championships

SPOKANE, WA -- Spokane Men and Women's track teams captured NWAACC titles Tuesday, easily cruising past Clackamas who finished runner-up on both sides.  

The Sasquatch men accumulated 267 pts to Clackamas' 148 pts while Southern Region champion Lane came in third with 134 pts.

Spokane's Spencer Wordell, the 2011 NWAACC Decathlon Champion, collected the most points overall in the men's events with 28.50 pts. Wordell along with Clackamas' James Ratliff were named the men's Outstanding Track Athletes while Lane's Jordan Parker was named the men's Outstanding Field Athlete.

Spokane's women outdistanced the Clackamas ladies by 76 pts, 250-174 to claim their title. Southern Region champ Lane followed with 145 pts. 

Spokane's Stephanie Cummings was named the female Outstanding Track Athlete while Clackamas' Katie Higgins & Keisa Monterola both were selected as the women's Outstanding Field Athletes.  2011 NWAACC Heptathlon Champion Shayle Dezellum of Spokane was the women's high point scorer with 38.50 pts.

Spokane skipper Larry Beatty was named the men and women's Coach of the Year.

The titles represents Spokane women's eighth consecutive and the men's seventh straight.  Spokane men have dominated the sport since the the program's inception in 1969, winning 31 of the 42 championships in which it has participated. The Sasquatch women have been nearly as impressive, winning 18 of the 32 championship the ladies have taken part in.
