Bud Black has been hired as the new Colorado Rockies manager, a person with direct knowledge told USA TODAY Sports.

The person requested anonymity because Black's hiring has not been announced.

This will be the second team he will manage in the NL West.

Black, 59, was the manager for the San Diego Padres from 2007-2015 and compiled a 649-713 record over nine seasons, but never reached the postseason.

The 2010 National League manager of the year was fired by the Padres during the 2015 midseason.

Shortly after, he served as special assistant to Los Angeles Angels GM Billy Eppler after his dismissal. Before the 2016 season, he reportedly turned down the Washington Nationals managerial position because of a low-ball offer.

The Rockies announced in early October that Walt Weiss would not return as their manager. Colorado was 75-87. Weiss went 283-365 (.437), failing to finish higher than third place in each season in the NL West.
